The woman, arrested for allegedly killing her stepdaughter, has said she killed the girl because she never called her mother, police said on Saturday.

The stepmother, Monu Kaur, allegedly murdered 21-year-old Prapti Singh at Ansari Marg in Dehradun, chopped her body into pieces and kept them in a sack in her bedroom. Kaur was arrested on Friday.

Inspector BBD Juyal said when the girl’s aunt, Tripti Sakhuja, asked Kaur why she committed the crime, the woman alleged that Prapti “never called her mother and this irritated her.”

The police produced Kaur before a court on Saturday evening and sought her custody.

Kotwali police station in-charge Chandra Mohan said the accused has accepted her crime. “We are investigating the case from all angles,” he said.

Police said on Friday that Kaur confessed to have killed Prapti because “she was fed up with boys visiting her”. Police also suspect a property angle to the murder.

Prapti’s father, who was a property dealer, died about 18 months ago. She was the only child. The girl was pursuing air hostess course from a private institute.

“So far we have not made any new arrests as Kaur has accepted that she killed her stepdaughter,” Juyal said.

Police also took Kaur to Doon Hospital for a medical examination. When asked if she has accepted her crime as claimed by the police, Kaur nodded.
