Customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) caught three passengers who were smuggling gold by making granules out of it and mixing it with an orange-flavoured fruit drink mix.
But based on specific input, customs officials seized the consignment and segregated the gold from the powder. Gold worth R 20 lakh was recovered.
The passengers had arrived from Riyadh via Abu Dhabi by Emirates airlines on Saturday.
“Apart from 700 gm gold granules, three gold bars weighing 349.92 gm were also seized. The value of the seized gold was R 31.56 lakh. The passengers have been arrested and the gold has been seized,” said a customs officer.
According to the customs department, the gold mixed with the fruit drink powder was hard to detect. “It was mixed in a way that it was impossible to spot it with the naked eye. But when we segregated it using sieves of different sizes. There were three bottles containing the mixture,” the officer said.
Customs has seized 214 kg gold this year worth R 59.92 crore. In 2016, 180 kg gold was seized.
