A 26-year-old physiotherapist has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife whose body was found inside the box of a bed at their residence in southeast Delhi’s Tuglaqabad Extension on January 29.

The accused, Suresh Singh, had married twice and he killed his second wife Maria Masih alias Savitri Mehra, 30, because he wanted to live with his first wife Lata Singh, said the police. Officials said Singh was married to both the women at the same time.

Deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said Singh was arrested from his village in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar on Thursday after a police team traced him with the help of local inputs and found that he was planning to escape to Nepal.

“After his arrest, he told us that on January 11, he murdered Maria Masih by smothering her with a pillow. He then wrapped her body in a quilt and then hid it in a bed box and fled to Bageshwar. Being a physiotherapist, he was aware that body would decompose slowly during winters and he would have comfortably escaped by the time people would have found out, ” said Biswal.

During interrogation, Singh revealed that he had met Masih in 2012 through Facebook and befriended her. In 2013, they started living together in Dehradun.

“Singh’s parents were not aware of his live-in relationship with Masih and they arranged his marriage with Lata, who was from their own village. Singh married Lata in 2015 without informing Masih about it. However, she came to know of the marriage through Facebook,” said Biswal.

According to the police, Masih allegedly started pressuring Singh to marry her. After 15 days of his marriage to Lata, Singh reportedly married Masih at Arya Samaj Mandir in Dehradun. Masih had earlier converted to Christianity and had changed her name from Savitri Mehra. To marry Singh, she changed her name back to Savitri. However, the parents and family members of Singh were unaware of their son’s second marriage.

A few months later, Lata learnt about Singh’s second marriage through an acquaintance and asked him to leave Masih.

“On the other hand, Masih used to pressure Singh to leave Lata and stay with her. In 2017, after finishing his physiotherapy degree, Singh came to Delhi along with Masih. All this while Singh was under constant pressure from both his wives to leave the other. He was inclined to live with Lata and told her that he will sort out the issue soon and would leave Masih for good,” said Biswal.

In order to get rid of Masih, Singh decided eventually decided to murder her, Biswal said.
