An attempt to kill a rival inside the Rohini court premises on Tuesday morning was foiled with the arrest of four members of a gang led by jailed gangster Neeraj Bawana, police said.
The four men were arrested with two pistols and four cartridges outside the Rohini court at 8 am, hours before they were to execute the murder plan, said Rajneesh Gupta, deputy commissioner of police (Rohini).
The officer said the four arrested men were acting at the directions of Neeraj Bawana and they were being questioned about their plan.
Their target was Gaurav alias Monty, who is in jail for an attempt to murder case and possessing arms. Police said he had a rivalry with Bawana and was to appear at Rohini Court for a hearing.
“The special staff of north district had a tip-off about the murder plan. They took position outside the Rohini Court around 7.30 am on Tuesday and alerted us. We sent a team to assist them,” said the DCP.
The four suspects were spotted riding on two motorcycles on a service road parallel to the Ring Road, close to the Rohini Court. They were caught and the weapons recovered from them.
Police identified the four men as Sandeep, Tarun, Lalit and Pankaj. “The men have admitted to the murder plan and said they would have carried out the killing either inside the court premises,” said another investigator, adding they are being questioned to know how they planned to smuggle the pistols into the court premises.
Murders inside Delhi’s courts are not unheard of. Last November, an undertrial prisoner was shot dead inside Rohini Court. Before that, a policeman was killed and three others injured when a gang opened fire on their rival inside Karkardooma Court premises in December 2015.
