NEW DELHI: An angry motorist assaulted a 35-year-old man with an iron rod in front of his wife and two children after a minor accident on South Delhi’s MG Road last week, police said on Monday.

A scuffle over a late night car crash on Friday quickly took an ugly turn with one of the drivers allegedly thrashing the other with an iron rod.

Minutes later, dental technician Pradeep Chauhan was admitted to a hospital with head injuries. Alleged attacker, Vineet Kumar, a hairstylist, was arrested on non-bailable charges.

Chauhan, a resident of south east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar, was allegedly driving home with his family. When he reached Andheria More near Qutub Minar, he bumped into a car that reportedly stopped abruptly.

“I applied brakes, but ended up hitting his car. Both our cars were damaged. Mine was damaged in the front while his was damaged at back,” he said.

Chauhan said he saw Kumar getting an iron rod from his car. “My wife told him we will pay for the damages, but he was violent. My wife and kids (aged 12 years and 10 years) apologized, but he refused to listen.”

“His wife tried stopping him from hurting me, but he did not listen. He hit me on my head at least 4-5 times because of which I fainted,”he told police.

“He even threatened my kids. My wife also received one blow with his iron rod. I had fallen unconscious by that time.”

Residents at the spot caught Kumar and handed him to the police. Police registered a case of attempt to commit culpable homicide and criminal intimidation against him.

Kumar filed a separate complaint alleging that Chauhan was drunk at time of the incident.Police said that was not true. Additional deputy commissioner of police (south) Nupur Prasad said,” The accident took place when the signal turned red and one car stopped while the other could not.”
