HC allows Khalsa College to start admissions under minority status

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Monday allowed Delhi University’s Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College to commence its admission process for this academic year under the minority status granted to it in 2011.

The order came while hearing a plea of the varsity teachers who have sought a stay on the National Commission for Minority Educational Institution order granting minority status to the college. Justice GS Sistani remarked, “How are the teachers of the college affected if students are given admission under the minority status. Life of students cannot be put into uncertainty”.

The high court further said, “Fresh appointments of teachers in the college will be subject to the final outcome of the writ petition.”

In its interim order on Sunday, the HC had allowed the counselling process to begin in the college.

The teachers had claimed that if admissions under the minority status is allowed, their service conditions would be affected and it would also affect the interests of SC/ST students.

The college was granted minority status in 2011, which was challenged by teachers as well as the DU after which a stay was granted by high court in 2012, according to the petition filed by the teachers.
