NEW DELHI: The heart of a 22-year-old road accident victim was flown from Rajasthan to Delhi and transplanted in a 54-year-old man with heart failure.
NEW DELHI: The heart of a 22-year-old road accident victim was flown from Rajasthan to Delhi and transplanted in a 54-year-old man with heart failure.
The 241-km distance from Jaipur to Delhi was covered in 56 minutes. A green corridor was created from the airport to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and the distance of 18.2 kms was covered in 16 minutes.
The recipient was critical and had to be admitted to a hospital several times due to complications from the heart failure, a chronic condition in which the heart does not pump blood as well as it should.
The doctors told him that a heart transplant was his only option. The recipient, who was from Gorakhpur, was put on the transplant list of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute two months ago, and he continued waiting in the city for a suitable heart. Escorts received a call late Tuesday night about the availability of the heart from a brain dead patient.
A heart can stay outside the body for four hours, after which it cannot be transplanted.
There has been a major increase in the number of patients on transplant waiting lists as well as in the number of patients dying while on the waiting list. In India, the annual requirement of hearts is estimated to be around 50,000.
