NEW DELHI: The Delhi unit of Congress on Saturday alleged that the Municipal Corporations of Delhi and Delhi Police had been harassing vendors despite a Delhi High Court order prohibiting them from doing so.

Delhi unit chief of Congress Ajay Maken said the court order had clearly stated that the municipal authorities would not evict any vendor without following the due process of law.

Addressing a press conference, the Congress leader also said the Street Vendors’ (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, passed in 2014, mandated that without giving designated vending sites, street vendors would not be evicted.

“As per the mandate of the act, town vending committees were to be constituted to survey and identify vending and non-vending zones. But, the process has not been completed yet. The Delhi government, Delhi Police, municipal corporations and the New Delhi Municipal Council, however, have evicted 10,000 vendors in the last three days,” Maken said.
