The businessman, Rohit, had gone missing from near his Mangolpuri house on August 19. The crime took place the same day.

On Wednesday, the police solved the case with the arrest of Rohit’s former wife’s husband, Mukesh, her minor brother and his two friends, one of whom is a juvenile, and one named Vijay. Police said they killed Rohit because he was suspected to have been in a relationship with his former wife.

Police said Rohit was kidnapped and his head chopped off. His headless body was burnt at an isolated place on the DwarkaGurgaon Expressway. They stuffed his head in a plastic bag and buried it in a park in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka.

After questioning the accused, the police dug out Rohit’s buried head from the park. His burnt body was found by the Gurgaon Police a day after the crime. A case was registered at the Rajendra Park police station in Gurgaon, said police.

Vikramjit Singh, deputy commissioner of police(outer), saidon August 25, Rohit’s father Ashok Kumar filed a missing person’s complaint. Kumar told police that Rohit’s was married in 2013 but he took divorce from his wife in 2015. In April 2016, the woman, whose name the police withheld, married Mukesh, a cab driver.

Police said despite having divorced her, Rohit continued to meet his ex-wife. “My son’s former wife used to call him at odd hours and the two often met,” Rohit’s father told HT.

When Mukesh learnt about his wife’s closeness to Rohit, he reprimanded her but she did not listen to him. Mukesh shared the matter with her brother and they planned to kill Rohit. They also included their two friends into the murder plan.

On August 19, the four invited Rohit for drinks at Mukesh’s residence in the evening. When Rohit got drunk, they took him on a drive in Mukesh’s Innova car. They drank in the car too.

Mukesh stopped the car at an isolated place on Dwarka-Gurgaon Expressway. They all stepped out on the pretext of urinating. As Rohit came out of the car, Vijay smothered him and he fell unconscious.

“The four then chopped off Rohit’s head with a sharp weapon that they hid in the vehicle. They put his headless body in a pit, poured oil and thinner on it and set it on fire. The head was buried in a public park in Dwarka’s Sector-20,” said Singh.

Rohit’s family suspects his former wife is also involved in the crime. Investigators said they were probing her role as well. Rohit ran a small ready-made garment shop in Mangolpuri, said police.
