NEW DELHI: On the day he was to get engaged to his girlfriend, a 24-year-old businessman was killed after the BMW he was driving rammed the grille of the Oberoi Hotel flyover, flung in the air and turned turtle early Saturday morning.

Abhijit Singh, a builder, was returning from his bachelor party around 5am, going towards his home in Majlis Park, Model Town, from Defence Colony when he lost control over the vehicle and rammed the grille of the flyover.
On impact, the car flew across the road and tumbled for 50 metres before coming to a halt. The car’s roof was severely damaged and the doors were jammed.
A passerby saw the accident and rushed to save him. He reportedly cut open the seat belt and pulled Singh out. He was rushed to Moolchand hospital and admitted for treatment. He also made a PCR call and informed the police about the accident.
Singh, who was admitted to the intensive care unit, could not survive and succumbed to his injuries later in the day. “He sustained severe head injuries that caused internal bleeding. We have sent the body for a postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death. We have also initiated an inquiry,” a senior police officer said.
Singh’s family was in shock and refused to speak to the media. “Singh’s father, a builder, had been preparing for his son’s engagement. Even though he had asked Singh to be at home, a day before the engagement, he had insisted to go and party with his friends,” a police officer said.
It is still unclear if Singh was driving under the influence of alcohol. “The car was definitely speeding. It appears Singh wanted to take the flyover, but instead of going towards the right, the car slid left.
“He tried to cut to his right, but it was too late and the car rammed the grille on the left and slid. Even though he was wearing a seat belt, he could not be saved. Had the car been under the speed limit, it would not have toppled over,” a senior police officer said.
Singh is survived by his parents and an 18-year-old brother.
