Owners can now get the certificate issued within a day from the comfort of their homes, said a senior SDMC official.

The registration of a dog is mandatory but a majority of people don’t register their pets because of the cumbersome process .“With the launch of online facility, owners can get their pets registered easily. The process is simple, transparent and hassle-free,” the official said.

If the owners still fail to get their pet dogs registered, they would be challaned Rs 500 or the pet dog will be impounded, he said. Applicants can download the form from SDMC’s website. Documents like anti-rabies vaccination certificate, a photograph of the animal, residence proof and identity proof of the owner, will have to be submitted.

The SDMC will charge Rs 511 for the registration process.

According to an estimate by the SDMC, there are two lakh pets in south Delhi, and only 500 pets are registered. The SDMC has also started a census of stray dogs along with Human Society International, an NGO.

Sahil Kumar, a resident of Greater Kailash I said: “It was difficult to take a dog to the SDMC office. Secondly, there were problems in figuring out which all documents are needed. The online process will make things easier.”

This initiative will help the SDMC gauge the exact number of pet dogs that are vaccinated in different zones. The unique registration number that a dog will sport post registration, will help trace it in case it goes missing.

The civic agency has four zones, central, south, west and Najafgarh, and according to officials, the most number of pets are in the south zone.
