In the first incident, a 24-year-old married woman was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her in-laws’ home in Jyoti Nagar on Saturday. The woman’s family members have accused her husband and in-laws of allegedly murdering her and then hanging the body from the ceiling fan to make it look like a suicide.

They alleged that their daughter, identified as Ku sum, was being physically and mentally tortured allegedly by her in-laws for dowry. Police received a suicide note from her possession in which she did not blame anybody for taking the extreme step.

On Sunday, Kusum’s family members, relatives and neighbours staged a protest at Loni Road by laying her body on the road and blocking the traffic. The protesters demanded justice for Kusum. They asked the police to register a case of murder against her in-laws and arrest them. The demonstrators were pacified by senior police officers who assured them of swift action against the culprits. By afternoon, Kusum’s husband, Ram Kishan, 27, was taken into custody for questioning.

In another suicide case reported from Shahdara, a 27-year-old man, who got married only three months ago, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at home on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Shaurya. He lived with his wife, parents and brothers at their Gorakh Park home near Shahdara. Police suspects that Shaurya was depressed over his poor financial condition and job.

The police said the incident came to light around 4am when Shaurya’s wife, Riddhi, found him hanging and alerted other family members. “Around 4am, she went to check on him and found his body hanging,” the officer said, adding Shaurya worked in a private company. No suicide note was found.
