A Delhi court on Wednesday sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his minor niece, terming his act as “diabolic and barbaric”.

“The word ‘mama’ for maternal uncle has two ‘Ma’ in it,”Additional Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma said.

“The accused by his diabolic and barbaric acts betrayed the trust and respect reposed upon him by his real sister and his family."

The court awarded the prison term along with a fine of Rs 15,000 on accused Mohd Zakir, 36, holding him guilty of rape.

It also said the relationship of a maternal uncle and his niece was sullied by the acts of the accused. The court relied on the victim’s medical report which proved the charges.
