3 killed in house collapse
Three people were killed and a few others were feared trapped when a single-storied residential building collapsed in Meethapur area of Badarpur in southeast Delhi on Tuesday evening.
Three people were killed and a few others were feared trapped when a single-storied residential building collapsed in Meethapur area of Badarpur in southeast Delhi on Tuesday evening.
The house was being lifted above the ground level with the help of a "jack", when it collapsed. The house belongs to one Ved Prakash Awana who had given it on a contract to one Chander Pal from Uttar Pradesh.
Awana is a driver and he did not live at the house. It was an empty house and he had given the job to a contractor to raise the level with the help of a jack.
Kal, one of the survivors who was pulled out of the debris said: "Suddenly everything came crashing down. I ran for my life but was trapped. I don't know how it collapsed, we were doing some construction work and were lifting the building above the ground level with the help of jacks." Several people were working at the construction site.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi said the "sanction plan" for the building was not required as it is located in a rural area.
"As it is a rural area, the residents are not required to get the building plan sanctioned. As it was an old structure, the building collapsed when they were lifting it up," said Vijendra Gupta, Chairman of the Standing Committee, MCD.
Those dead have been identified as Rajbir, Sonu and Premraj, all in their mid-twenties. They were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where they were declared brought dead.
“Three were brought dead. Seven others who were brought in with injuries on their chest, arms and legs are now out of danger,” said a doctor at the AIIMS trauma centre.
A case of death due to negligence was registered against unknown persons at the Badarpur police station. The police were conducting raids at UP to apprehend the contractor. All the labourers were brought from Barot in UP to do the construction work.
