The cost over runs are due to escalation and other factors, including delays in projects for various reasons, change in scope and increase in quantities, Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The cost overrun of these projects is 15.8 per cent of their original approved costs, the statement said.

The number of such projects were 285 till March 31, 2004. Out of this, as many as 118 projected a cost escalation of Rs 28,472.6 crore till March end in 2004, which was 52 per cent of their approved original costs.
