Four new cases of dengue have been reported in the Capital in the last 24 hours, taking the total cases to 35 so far, reports HT Correspondent.

Worried at the possibility of accelerated growth in mosquito breeding as the monsoons slowly start receding, civic authorities are now considering to spray Temephos, an insecticide that helps prevent the breeding of the Aedes mosquito along the Yamuna River.

“Soon after rains, when the floodwaters of Yamuna will start withdrawing, water pockets will form, which are good breeding grounds for mosquitoes. We are planning to do anti-larval spray treatment on all water collection areas to check the spread of dengue,” said Dr NK Yadav, municipal health officer.

“Since dengue spreading mosquitoes breed mostly in fresh water—mostly in homes and hospitals we are also planning to impose harsh penalties on property-holders, who fail to keep the premises free of mosquito breeding,” he adds. Dengue peaks around August and September. MCD officials are suspecting more cases will be reported if people do not take immediate steps.

“Since most MCD organised awareness campaigns and checks have not yielded desired results, we are considering starting the drive of imposing heavier fines on property owners very soon, however dates are still undecided,” said Dr Yadav, Municipal Health Officer, MCD.

“Most of these cases are often reported from the most congested areas,” said Dr VK Monga, Chairman of the health committee, MCD.
