Eventually it rained only about 6 mm, but forecasters said more rain was expected.

According to BBC Weather, heavy rainfall will drench the city in the next four days. The government’s National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, too, said that significant amounts of rainfall was expected as Delhi was in the middle of a rainy system.

Starting at around 5 pm, it rained in spurts for half an hour. After a break of around half an hour, it revived to a thorough downpour for about 20 minutes, making matters difficult for homebound commuters.

The Met department said the passing of a western disturbance and some cyclonic circulation had brought home the clouds and the effects would linger.

“The temperatures would be low and the rainfall will be fairly distributed across the city,” said a Met official at the Safdarjung Met observatory.

Delhi’s monsoon graph, which was looking up for last week, has had a slight dip once again as the seasonal rainfall deficit has reached 26 per cent, up from 18 per cent on Saturday.

“Delhi should have received around 570 mm rainfall my now. It has received around 444.6 mm,” the official said.

The heat remained tamed with temperatures between 24.5-32 degrees Celsius.

The downpour was enough to bring back the usual pain of traffic snarls and clogged drains along some of the main arterial roads.

“Even the slightest rainfall causes so much traffic jam that sometimes I wonder whether Delhi has any drains at all,” said Prabudha Kundu, a software engineer, who was stuck in a traffic jam in the evening on Ring Road near Maharani Bagh.
