The Crime Branch claimed that the cellphone bearing the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), same as Aarushi's Nokia N-72, was recovered from a peon hailing from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, 16 months after the girl and her domestic help Hemraj were found murdered in her Noida home.

CBI spokesperson Harsh Bahal declined to confirm or deny whether the premier investigating agency had got the mobile from Delhi Police. The instrument that could give some clues has been missing since the sensational double murder in Noida.

Bahal said, "the probe is in progress and in consonance with the Supreme Court directions, CBI does not wish to share with the media any information about the case as it could hamper the investigation."

Aarushi's mother Nupur Talwar said the recovery of the mobile has given a "ray of hope" to nab the culprits.

A senior police official said the Crime Branch got the IMEI number of Aarushi's mobile from records procured for probe in a criminal case. Ramphool's sister Kusum said her brother was innocent and was not involved in the crime.

"We were looking for a particular number when suddenly our surveillance system flashed that one of the mobiles was active. That particular one was not related to our case but as we found that one was active, we collected the details.

"To our surprise, we found that it was that of Aarushi and our team conducted investigations last week and tracked it down. It took around two to three days," he said. Adding they found it was active since February.
