Ahmed cornered, Jaitley slams Congress for communalising polls

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley slammed the Congress for its “desperate strategy” to “communalise” the electorate ahead of the 2014 elections even as the Congress disapproved of the remarks of Shakeel Ahmed that the 2002 Gujarat riots had led to the formation of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM).

“It is not the party line as of now,” party spokesperson Renuka Choudhary told reporters when asked about Ahmed’s tweet. Also, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and his deputy RPN Singh refused to comment on the matter.

But Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh supported Ahmed’s tweet that criticised the BJP and the RSS and said “religious fundamentalism is at the root of terrorism.”

Jaitley said in an article posted on the BJP website that the Congress-led UPA government was facing a huge anti-incumbency and hence “its desperate strategy appears to be to deflect the agenda... Communalise the polity in the country and change the electoral agenda.

All those who want to throw UPA out of office must understand that their focus must remain on the issues of governance which UPA will try to duck.” RSS leader Ram Madhav said, “Congress is the fountainhead of all forms of terrorism in India...this is an “old gimmick” of the ruling party in which its leaders make such reckless remarks.”
