AIIMS gets high-end technology for treating brain tumours

Therefore, doctors at AIIMS are now treating brain tumour faster and more effectively than ever before.

This was made possible after the hospital procured a new radiation system called Gamma Knie Perfexion.

"We have a new radio surgery system at our disposal. It is called Gamma Knife Perfexion. There are six such equipments in the whole of the country with only two in the government sector. The other one is in PGI Chandigarh," Dr AK Mahapatra, professor of Neurosurgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences said.

The machine which costs nearly twenty three and a half crores started functioning from June 8 in the hospital.

"Till date we have done 50 cases," he said.

"It is better than the older version that we had since 1997. We procured this as the spare parts of the older one were not available. We accomplished 2600 cases with the older machine. Moreover this new one is a computerised version giving quicker and safer service," Dr Mahapatra said.

Gamma Knife Perfexion treats one or more tumours in a single session, and has the potential to treat lesions in the paranasal sinuses, orbits and upper cervical spine — even para spinal metastases and laryngeal tumours.
