Airport lobbies ‘Son of the Wind’ for safe flights

Pavanputra — literally son of the wind — Hanuman now has a new address. The Delhi Airport. Driving down Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway towards Dhaula Kuan, you might have noticed the new south Indian-style temple in the airport area, after crossing Radisson Hotel.
The temple to Hanuman has been built by private airport developer Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), for safe and accident-free operations. After all, the Monkey God is also known as sankat mochan — averter of crises.
Construction of the small temple, built over 100 sqm, was started in August 2008. “The temple would be opened to public in a couple of months,” said a DIAL spokesman.
“The temple has been built to appease gods, so there are no accidents or mishaps in the airport,” said a senior airport official who didn’t wish to be named.
“During the construction of the new buildings and modernisation of the airport, some religious structures had to be relocated, and in a way, this is to atone for that.”
Though it is inside the Indira Gandhi International Airport, the temple is not part of the operational area. There is also a very popular Mazar inside the airport.
