A protest against power cuts in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar turned violent on Wednesday morning as people started hurling stones at buses. At least four buses, including one of DTC, were damaged.

“They did not let any vehicle pass through. Senior police officials had to go to the spot to pacify the crowd. They managed to block the road till 3.30 pm. We are monitoring the situation and adequate forces were deployed to maintain law and order in the locality. A case has been registered against unknown people for rioting,” a senior police official said.

“The water supply has become erratic over the last few days and lasts for merely 20 minutes. The posh areas are still getting water while other areas are getting nothing,” said VK Arora, a resident of Karkardooma in east Delhi.

It was the same story in other parts of the city, too, where people protested against water shortage and power cuts.
In Kondli and Rajbir Nagar, people protested against water shortage. The protesters blocked traffic for some time.

“We are not getting the regular water supply for the past two days. The water supply is also quite erratic. We are spending a lot buying packaged water. How are we to survive in this hot weather?” said Rajesh Dokwal, member of Mayur Vihar MIG Flats Pocket 6 RWA.

“We got merely half an hour of water supply today, but during that time there was no power supply, so the pressure-boosting motors didn’t function and we couldn’t store water,” said DM Narang, general secretary of Rajinder R block welfare association.

The city has been witnessing long power cuts ever since the mercury soared to around 44° Celsius.
