The matter came to light at around 7am and the unidentified woman, who was wearing a green saree, was found in a pool of blood by a passerby who immediately made a call to the police.
"The woman's throat was slit and to conceal her identity, the killer had smashed her face with stones. Prima facie, it appears that she was murdered somewhere else and her body was dumped in the area," said a police officer. A case of murder has been registered.
The police have not ruled out the possibility of the victim being sexually abused before being murdered brutally. The body was sent to GTB Hospital for post-mortem.
