BJP seeks death for rapists

The BJP on Wednesday wrote to the Justice JS Verma Committee, suggesting that gangrape, custodial rape, rape committed after abduction, and the infliction of "life-altering injuries" on a victim be made punishable with death.

The BJP on Wednesday wrote to the Justice JS Verma Committee, suggesting that gang rape, custodial rape, rape committed after abduction, and the infliction of "life-altering injuries" on a victim - such as disfiguration, gouging out an eye or severing of a limb - be made punishable with death.

The letter - written by party president Nitin Gadkari to the panel looking into laws on rape - also recommends that changes be proposed in the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, to change the definition of juvenile to a person "who has not completed 16 years of age". The party has rejected the idea of chemical castration.
