Ali signed the papers in the presence of Tihar Jail Superintendent on Friday and they were submitted before the returning officer by his wife Shakeera Begum, who also filed nominations as his covering candidate.

The BSP candidate was sent to judicial custody for 14 days after he was arrested for “inciting” a mob to pelt stones at Bhajanpura police station during a protest demanding the arrest of two persons in a murder case.

BSP leaders said discussions were on to decide whether Dilshad’s candidature should be withdrawn as he would not be available for campaigning for most part of the electioneering process.

In case, the party decides to withdraw Ali from the Lok Sabha race, then his wife will be the official candidate of BSP as she is his covering candidate.

“The decision to field Begum as the covering candidate has the approval of Mayawati,” Noushad Ahmed Khan, Ali’s lawyer who was present during filing of nominations, told reporters.
