CBSE board exam: Class 12 English paper ‘moderately’ easy

Students and teachers on Thursday said that the CBSE Class XII English paper was of “moderate” difficulty level and most students had no difficulty in attempting it.

The Class X and Class XII board examinations and school based exams had started on Wednesday.

On Thursday, most teachers termed the English paper as “predictable”, with some students saying that the paper was easy but lengthy, due to which it took time for them to complete it.

“It was a predictable paper and there was nothing difficult in it that students of Class XII could not have attempted. Most questions were straight and there were options in most of them,” said Kavita Rana, principal of a government school.

Teachers said the English paper could be dubbed as moderate on the difficulty level and was aimed at setting to rest the apprehension and nervousness of students.

“The paper maintains a reasonable balance between different topics. Students with good comprehension skills would have been able to attempt the multiple choice questions and the questions testing vocabulary in Section A, with ease,” said Tripura Mulasi, English Teacher at Mount Abu Public School.

“My exam was very nice. The paper wasn’t difficult but it was lengthy. Someone who could attempt the paper with time management will score good,” said Ritika, a student from a private school.

A few teachers also pointed out mistakes in the question paper. “There was a wrong apostrophe in today’s paper. Question number 13 read ‘How does Dr Cuss’s encounter with Griffin end in a disaster?’ The correct line should have been ‘Cuss’ encounter’,” said Firoz Bhakt Ahmed, English teacher at Modern School, Barakhamba Road.

The CBSE English examination for Class X was also conducted at 16,363 centres across the country while that for Class XII was held in 10,678 centres in India. Fifty-eight examination centres had also been set up in some Gulf countries and six in various other countries for the exams.

The CBSE has a three-tier arrangement to monitor students during exams and surprise checking — flying squads from the board itself, officials from Delhi’s Directorate of Education (DoE) and those from outside Delhi.

In a first, the board has also come up with a mobile application to help students locate their examination centre using their phone numbers.
