Centre suggests states to take action against mafia gangs

The Centre has suggested to the state Govts to take focussed measures to identify mafia gangs, extortion groups and land sharks and take action against them, keeping in view their possible nexus with terrorist outfits.

The Centre has suggested to the state governments to take focussed measures to identify mafia gangs, extortion groups and land sharks and take action against them, keeping in view their possible nexus with terrorist outfits.

The state governments have also been advised to set up a dedicated and well equipped cell under a senior officer to comprehensively monitor and deal with organised crimes such as drug trafficking, money laundering and circulation of counterfeit currency, among others.

This was disclosed by Union Minister of State for Home Shakeel Ahmad while replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

However, police and public order being state subjects under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, the state governments are primarily responsible for prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crime and criminals, he said.
