In fact, the civic body also plans to build a shelter to keep the impounded pigs and construct a slaughterhouse for them.

According to the civic body, the high court in 1992 had allowed the All India Piggery Products Dealers Association to use their private slaughterhouses for slaughtering pigs.

“We have received many complaints regarding slaughtering of pigs. To make sure that pigs are slaughtered in hygienic conditions, we have decided to construct a slaughterhouse for them,” said MCD Commissioner K S Mehra.

Stray pig menace has been reported largely from resettlement colonies and the Walled City, where some people are involved in the trade of pig meat. “As there is no pig market in the Capital, many people rear pigs at home for slaughter. These pigs stray out and can be found near garbage dumps,” said an MCD official.

Like in Kasturba Nagar, there are about 50 pigs. “I have complained several times but no action has been taken. They are illegally slaughtered and the unhygienic conditions can lead to

infectious diseases,” said Jitender Singh Shunty, Shahdara south zone councilor.
