He said everyone in the party wants Gandhi to play such a role.

“I am absolutely sure that Rahul Gandhi will play a much more proactive role in the party. Let the presidential and vice-presidential polls get over. Wait till September,” Singh told a news channel.

“If he (Rahul) had gone too fast, the media would have criticised him… but now there is a demand within the party. So, I think the time has come.”

Singh’s remarks came close on the heels of law minister Salman Khurshid's controversial comments that the party had only seen “cameos” of Gandhi’s thoughts and ideas.

Khurshid later said his statements on Gandhi and the Congress had been wrongly interpreted. Singh defended Khurshid, saying the minister had merely reflected the party’s view that Gandhi should play a bigger role in the party.
