The hour-long meeting, chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and also attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, deliberated on ways and means to resolve the statehood issue.

The meeting took place after central leaders had detailed deliberations with chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and governor ESL Narasimhan as also a cross section of leaders from Telangana and other parts of Andhra Pradesh.

While the discussions within the Congress party are over, consultations with other stake holders is the next step after which the UPA government might call an all party meeting to evolve a consensus on the issue. "But there is no decision yet," Congress sources said.

The sources said the proposal of setting up the second states reorganisation commission also came up for discussion at the meeting.

But the Telangana Congress MPs and other political parties had earlier rejected this suggestion.
