Contempt notice to lawyers who beat up judge

The Delhi High Court on Friday issued contempt notices against four lawyers who had allegedly slapped and manhandled a district court judge following a verbal duel two days ago.

“Prima facie, it (incident) amounts to contempt of court," a Bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah said. It issued notices to advocates Munish Chauhan, Rekha Sharma, Rajeev Tehlan and Jai Prakash.

The court constituted a three-judge special Bench which will take up the matter on August 4. It directed the four advocates to file their reply before the special Bench.

The court passed the order also taking into the cognisance a letter shot off by the District Judge referring the incident to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

The group of advocates had allegedly slapped and manhandled Additional District Judge Pankaj Gupta on July 8 at Rohini District Courts following the an argument.

Gupta, who presides over a family court hearing matrimonial cases, was made to stand against the wall, slapped and beaten. The lawyers who beat him up also thrashed court staff when they tried to stop them from reaching the judge.
