Deceased Delhi cop’s family may get Rs. 1 crore relief

The Delhi Traffic Police on Monday recommended a compensation of Rs. 1 crore for the family of the deceased traffic constable Manna Ram who lost his life on Saturday near northwest Delhi’s Zakhira flyover.

“We have written a letter to the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) on behalf of the department to increase the compensation for the bereaved family to Rs. 1 crore, considering the poor financial condition of the family,” said Muktesh Chander, special commissioner of police (traffic).

The current compensation from the Delhi Police welfare and martyr’s funds amount to a total of Rs. 38 lakh.

On his visit to the Police Headquarters on Monday Home Minister Rajnath Singh had asked for a report from the department on the incident on constable Ram’s death. The incident also received considerable outrage on social media after the Delhi traffic police updated it on their Facebook page.

In December 2013 the family of a 48-year-old excise constable killed by bootleggers while on duty was offered Rs. 1 crore by the Delhi government. Constable Vinod Kumar was brutally beaten up by the group and succumbed to his injuries before he could be taken to the hospital.
