The accused trio, the police said, had knocked on Kaushalya Devi’s Mansarovar Garden door posing as North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) employees who needed to check the reading on her electricity meter when the senior citizen was alone around 2pm on Tuesday.

“They had barged inside and one of them, later identified as Akhtar Hussain, had caught hold of her while his associates Sujit Chatterji and Arun Singh began ransacking her residence for valuables,” said an officer.

A few minutes into the robbery bid, Kaushalya managed to break free of Hussain’s hold, run outside and scream.

Neighbours came to her rescue and the three assailants were cornered, assaulted and handed over to the police.

“A case of robbery has been registered and the three were sent to jail,” the officer added.
