Delhi: Pay up to 10 times more for parking by the hour from today

For cars, citizens will have to pay a minimum of Rs 20 for the first hour. Till now, parking charges was just Rs 10, valid for up to 10 hours, uniform across the Capital.

The new rates, however, will differ from zone to zone, possibly leading to confusion.

After the first hour, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation will levy car owners Rs 20 per hour, with the maximum parking charges capped at Rs 100 a day. Motorbike and scooter owners will have to shell out Rs 10 an hour, up from the Rs 7 that was applicable for 10 hours. The maximum fee for parking two wheelers will be Rs 50 per day.

Areas under the North Delhi Corporation will see parking charges of Rs 10 per hour for four wheelers. Users will have to pay Rs 50 if they park their cars for up to five hours and Rs 100 for up to 10 hours. Authorities will charge a maximum fee of Rs 200 per day.

Citizens owning scooters and motorbikes will pay a minimum of Rs 10 for the first hour of parking and Rs 5 for every subsequent hour. Users will pay Rs 25 for five hours and Rs 50 for 10 hours.

Both corporations notified the increased rates this week. The East Delhi Municipal Corporation is expected to follow suit.

Officials said advertisements will be issued and information boards set up to create awareness about the new charges.

“We have asked parking contractors to install boards describing new rates.

Contractors will issue new parking slips and have electronic handheld devices to keep a check on hourly rates,” said Manish Gupta, commissioner, South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Authorities also claimed surprise checks will be conducted to ensure compliance, with strict punishment for overcharging or cheating consumers.

“Numbers of senior officers will be put on information boards. Dedicated helplines where citizens can complaint about parking issues is also in the pipeline,” said PK Gupta, said commissioner, North Corporation.
