“The government can help alert people and will take action wherever required. The police also have to be more alert now. Nearly 20 to 22 lakh people travel in the Metro, about 50 lakh travel daily in buses. To monitor these nearly 70-72 lakh people and to change the culture will take time,” Dikshit said.

“But we are making all efforts to create such an environment where nobody feels unsafe,” she said when asked to comment on the incident in which a woman was shot in the busy Sarai Kale Khan area on Sunday.

Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh called for stringent laws and effective policing to ensure that the city becomes safer for women. “It is unfortunate that criminals don’t fear the law. There should be strict laws and the police should be competent, so that the criminals know the rule of law prevails here,” she said.
