Last year, the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi registered 17,000 cases of dog bites. In contrast, from April 1, 2012 to March 1, 2013, the North Corporation recorded 31,608 cases, of which 16 died of rabies.

The other two corporations are yet to release their data.

The numbers are very alarming as the data only covers cases brought to municipal hospitals and clinics, when most such victims go to private hospitals.

The problem has to do with the lack of proper infrastructure to carry out sterilisation. In the past 11 months, 3,859 out of about 1.5 lakh dogs were sterilised in north Delhi.
