With Thursday being the last day for withdrawal of nominations, battle lines for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections have now been drawn.

The election office released the final list of candidates contesting for the posts of president, vice president, general secretary and joint secretary of the students’ union.

But the poll drama at DU began with a twist.

The election office issued a show-cause notice to six candidates from of the total 37 for violating the code of conduct.

“These candidates showed no regard for the code of conduct and held rallies, used cars and printed posters for their

campaign. They have been asked to give their replies by Friday evening. If we are not convinced by their replies, then they will be disqualified,” said Chief election officer Gurmeet Singh.

Two of the most conspicuous student parties on the campus – ABVP and NSUI — are the worst hit by the strong stance adopted by Singh against violators.

While the president, general secretary and joint secretary candidates of ABVP have received a show-cause notice the fate of NSUI candidates fighting for president and vice president’s posts also hangs in balance.

“Why weren’t the nomination of these candidates disqualified at the scrutiny level? It seems a little unfair for the Proctor to threaten them with disqualification at the last moment,” said Anand Pandey, national general secretary, NSUI.

DU goes to polls on September 4.
