E. Delhi to get 8-km green corridor

Mayur Vihar and other areas of east Delhi will finally get their green corner — where people can take walks, have fun with their children or be there just to relax and breathe some clean fresh air.

An eight-km stretch, up to 300 metres wide, along the Noida link road will be developed into a park soon, according to a plan conceived by the Uttar Pradesh government and to be executed by the Noida Authority. The park, on the stretch from NH-24 to the DND Flyover in the Yamuna riverbed, will be a named after Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram.

Landscape architect Surendra Suneja, who prepared the plan, said the park would have a golf course, children’s play area and a rose garden among other features. Visitors will be charged an entry fee.

The park will meet the recreational needs of people living in east Delhi who do not have sufficient green public spaces, said Suneja, head, landscape architecture department, School of Planning and Architecture. Besides, it will be a pleasant experience to drive along the green corridor, he added.

“The project has been planned with environmental sensitivity. Only those plant and tree species that are found in the riverine eco-system of the Yamuna will be planted. There will be no exotic plant and tree species,” said Suneja, who has in the past executed projects like the Kalindi Kunj Park in Okhla and the Sur Yamuna Ghat in Wazirabad.

A senior official of the Noida Authority said the land along the ‘bundh’ road was with the Flood and Irrigation Department of Uttar Pradesh and a decision to transfer the land to the Noida Authority was taken six weeks ago. This stretch of land apart, the rest of the riverbed is with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

Suneja said there would be no construction or civil works in the park and that it would continue to function as part of a water recharge zone.

The clover-leaf structures to be added to the Akshardham flyover on either side will be integrated with the project and for this discussions are on with the DDA.
