East civic body to tax government ad campaigns

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to levy advertisement tax on state and Union government hoardings that are used to advertise their policies on topics such as polio vaccination, Adhaar scheme and malaria treatment. HT reports.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to levy advertisement tax on state and Union government hoardings that are used to advertise their policies on topics such as polio vaccination, Adhaar scheme and malaria treatment.

The civic body's standing committee on Thursday also passed a proposal to charge rent on the space used by such hoardings.

Currently, the space is being provided free of cost despite that the government departments are spending a substantial amount of money on these campaigns. "This conforms to the policy the outdoor advertisement policy approved by the Supreme Court," an official said.
