"The exchanges will be more of counselling centres assisting students about jobs and the avenues available in different sectors," he told PTI.

He said the modernisation work will be completed by this year and students can register online from any part of the country.

The modernisation work will be carried out on PPP mode, he said and did not rule out tying up with well-known job portals like Naukri.com.

Till now 40.5 million candidates have registered with employment exchanges, he said.

Rawat said that his ministry was also laying stress on upgradation of ITIs in the country and the programme was progressing satisfactorily.

"We have already developed 400 ITIs as centres of excellence with the assistance of World Bank and another 100 on our own. Besides, 1,396 ITIs will be upgraded on the PPP mode in the second phase," he said.
