Exams over, college comes out with list of detained students

Twenty-eight days after classes were dispersed ahead of the semester exams and a week after the first-semester students of B.Com finished their exams, the college has come out with a list of nearly 65 students who have been detained — or should have been detained — from writing the exam due to low attendance.

Twenty-eight days after classes were dispersed ahead of the semester exams and a week after the first-semester students of B.Com finished their exams, the college has come out with a list of nearly 65 students who have been detained — or should have been detained — from writing the exam due to low attendance.

This is not the first time the college has detained students after they sat for the exam. In May, Shivan Mehan was one of the students whose name appeared on such a list, but with a difference. He was informed of this only after he had given his first exam. But this was not where the story ended. Mehan approached the Delhi high court and got a stay on the university's decision.

After the student appeared for the exams, the high court asked the university to provide him the result in a sealed envelope. This result stated the student had failed but when Mehan got a copy of his mark sheet, it clearly stated that he had passed.

The college, however, did not learn from its history of errors. Maintaining that the admit card given to the students is provisional, college principal IS Bakshi said the college was not in the wrong.

"It is true that the exams are over but there is nothing we can do. We put up the list as soon as it was available. We have to work according to the university rules and the rules state that students who do not have attendance up to 66.6% will have to be detained," he said.

The university rules, however, also state that in case students have low attendance, they have to be informed of the shortage five days before the preparatory leave begins.

On the other hand, most students are not even aware that they have been detained as their exams have ended and the college will reopen only in the new year.

"What the college has done is completely unfair and illegal. They did not inform us well in time that our attendance was short and did not give us a chance to submit any documents. We are planning to write to the university about this," said a student.
