Exhibition, mushaira to mark Mirza Ghalib’s birth anniversary

An exhibition of legendary poet Mirza Ghalib’s rare and priceless memorabilia at his haveli, a soundtrack of works related to him and a candlelight procession from Town Hall to Gali Qasim Jaan in Chandni Chowk will mark the 12th year celebrations of ‘Yaadgaar-e-Ghalib’.

Mirza Ghalib spent time at this haveli from 1860 to 1869. The three-day celebrations for the Ghalib’s birth anniversary on December 27 begins on December 26 and will comprise a film on his life, mushaira with eminent poets from the Indian sub-continent and Urdu comic play by Peirrots Troupe — ‘Ghalib in New Delhi’, at the India Islamic Cultural Centre.

Ghalib Memorial Movement, spearheaded by noted Kathak exponent Uma Sharma, organises the event annually and is supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Delhi government. India Islamic Cultural Centre too has joined the movement this year.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit will inaugurate the exhibition of Ghalib’s rare personal effects and soundtrack of his works being developed by ICCR. There would be a remarkable transformation of Ghalib’s Haveli, officials claimed. Dr Suresh K Goel, director general, ICCR, said, “The objective is to make the haveli an important marker on the heritage tourism trail of Delhi.”

The exhibition has been curated from Diwan-e-Ghalib and Ghalib Academy. “This and the soundtrack will weave together a lively tale of Ghalib’s life and works which will be attractive to both foreign and Indian tourists.”
