Family keeps mentally ill girl locked for 4 yrs

They kept her locked in a six feet by 10 feet room and threw away the keys. For the last four years, the dingy storeroom made up her whole world. She lived off bits of food thrown by some sympathetic neighbours. Her only crime was that she's mentally unstable.

A 28-year-old mentally unstable woman in Daryaganj, Central Delhi was kept locked inside a room for the last four years. Instead of giving her medical help, her four sisters and two brothers kept her locked inside their house.

The woman was rescued after an NGO came to know of her plight.

Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, chairperson of Sudinalay said, "We got information that a mentally unstable woman was kept locked for last several years by her family. We called the local police…. and rescued the girl."

A police official said her family members claimed they took her to a mental health facility earlier but when she refused to take medicines they decided to keep her under lock and key.

The girl has been sent to a mental health facility, where she is now being treated.
