The incident occurred at around 9 pm.

"When a cook in one of the restaurants was frying vegetables the flames got out of control and the electric wires caught fire leading to a short circuit. After that a fire broke out and spread in the entire food court comprising about a dozen restaurants," assistant fire officer (AFO) AP Singh said.

"The mall management informed the fire department, which controlled the fire after bringing in two fire tenders," Singh said.

"Due to the fire the entire mall was covered with smoke. After the incident the mall was closed for public entry," Singh added.

At the time of the incident there were about 3,000 people in the mall.
