With April 14 observed as the day of commemoration, the fire department has started the 'Smoke Management Saves Lives' campaign. The department is also undertaking a fire safety inspection of buildings, such as the city's schools and hospitals.

"Several lectures and demonstrations will also be given to the public and we are scheduling them in places where there is maximum public," said a Fire department official.

Some of the city malls, Metro stations, hospitals and schools will witness such lectures. In the past, too, the department had taken active part in the mock drills conducted by Delhi Disaster Management Authority.

"In the last fiscal, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received 22,441 calls, which is up from the previous fiscal's 22,187. Out of this, 13 were medium in nature and one serious. Over the last five years, the figure has increased from 15,000 despite improvement in fire fighting infrastructure," said DFS chief AK Sharma said.
