Two brothers who had gone for a swim in the river Yamuna drowned in Burari area of north district on Monday evening.

The victims, Bhairav (15) and Monu (9), were residents of Kaushik Enclave in Burari. The two, along with their youngest brother Gaurav (6), had gone for a swim when the incident occurred around 5.30pm.
Police said the matter came to light after Gaurav saw his brothers drowning in the river.
He immediately informed his mother Hema who in turn called the police control room (PCR).
After receiving the call, a police team along with divers from the fire department reached the spot and started the rescue operation.
"The victims’ bodies were fished out from the river around 9.30pm. During investigation, it was learnt that Monu drowned first. Seeing him drowning, Bhairav jumped into the river to rescue Monu but unfortunately he also drowned in the process,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
Prima facie, the official said, that it appeared that Monu’s foot slipped and he fell into
a deep ditch allegedly dug by people involved in illegal sand mining business.
The father of the deceased boys, Chandragat, who was a government employee, had died two years ago, while their mother works in a private company, police said.
