Applying for a driving licence will become easier in less than two weeks from now.
To apply for a licence, you can go to any of the 13 zonal transport offices in the Capital irrespective of the residential colony you live in. Moreover, you will be able to take an appointment online or on the phone to avoid standing in queues. At present an applicant has to apply at the regional transport office branch under which his locality falls.
For the convenience of people, especially office-goers, the transport department plans to keep its offices open on Saturdays and Sundays.
"Applicants with prior appointment will be entertained during the weekends," a transport official said.
Senior transport department officials said they have connected all zonal transport offices to the central server.
"There are certain zonal offices where only 20-30 persons turn up in a day to apply for the driving licence while others receive 200-300 applications everyday. The new system will help in equitable distribution of workload," Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh said.
"Since all the data will now be collated in the central server, the applicants will be able to go to any zonal office to get their licence made," he added.
The transport department has set up a customer care centre that will give appointments to applicants, help them fill up application forms and inform them about the documents needed.
"Applicants will be able to fill up their application forms online and make e-payments. The new system is going to revolutionise the way we get driving licences made," Delhi transport commissioner RK Verma said.
