Get ready for more traffic checks

Even as he maintained 'drives' had not helped improved the situation much, he said there would be "intensive challaning" of traffic violators from February 1.

After an year of various drives — from challaning two-wheelers to Bluelines to autorickshaws to pedestrians to people taking to wheels after drinking— and starting 2009 with a 'No Honking Day' drive, Commissioner of Police Y.S. Dadwal on Friday threatened yet another drive. Well almost!

Even as he maintained 'drives' had not helped improved the situation much, he said there would be "intensive challaning" of traffic violators from February 1.

"Nobody would be spared. We would carry out intensive challaning. Having said that, we strongly feel self-regulation is best regulation," Dadwal said.

And he didn't stop at that. "Each and every motorist must contribute (to road discipline), only then Delhi can be a world class city," he told reporters.

With traffic police chief S.N. Shrivastava by his side, the commissioner went on to detail various initiatives for improving road discipline, which mainly included enhancement in numbers of men and machines.

The concept of 'chase and challan' introduced last year with traffic patrol motorcycles has yielded good results and hence 210 traffic motorcycles would be added to the existing 210 vehicles soon, he said.

The police had recently deployed traffic personnel in 50 PCR vans and the exercise would be repeated for additional 50 PCR vans. The traffic police were likely to get 1,500 additional personnel, the commissioner added.

However, he evaded direct answers to questions about rampant corruption among ground staff of the department. "I don't deny there are no black sheep. We keep taking action as and when we come to know," Dadwal said.
