In a shocking incident a 16-year-old girl committed suicide after she was reportedly eve-teased by a bunch of men while returning home on Friday.

The police say no suicide note has been recovered and they are not sure of the exact reasons behind the incident.

The incident happened in Jyoti Nagar, East Delhi, on Friday. The deceased's family members say that the girl, a class 11 student was returning home when a group of boys allegedly eve-teased her.

“The family members told us that the victim came back home and was distraught about the whole thing. She did not speak to anyone and locked herself in her room,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The police said that around 9 pm, the victim's mother called her for dinner. When the girl did not open the door, the mother called other family members, who broke open the door and found the girl hanging from the ceiling fan.

She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead. The family has alleged that a group of boys in the locality had been eve-teasing her on a regular basis and that the girl was in depression due to this. The police are investigating the matter.
