A day after Army chief Gen Deepak Kapoor spoke about "stepped up efforts" to increase infiltration, the Prime Minister said the development was "worrisome".

He was replying to questions on the growing number of encounters in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the recent past after the Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"Terrorism and infiltration remain a matter of concern for our government," Singh said.

The Army chief had yesterday said the long drawn encounter in Kupwara yesterday was "definitely an indication of stepped up effort to increase infiltration."
